Three reasons why July is the ideal time for rising high school seniors to get started with the Common App Essay/Personal Statement.

1. With many schools going test optional, the essay holds more weight in the application review process. Give yourself time to produce your best essay.

2. Gone are the days of the typical college application being submitted in January of senior year. The college application time frame has gotten squeezed into a tighter window, with a number of schools filling more than half of their class through early action, early decision or rolling admission. Many students will start submitting college applications in August when the Common App application goes live. Most early action/early decision deadlines are before November 15.

3. Many colleges require supplemental essays in addition to the Common App Essay/Personal Statement. The supplemental essay prompts are released gradually over the summer. It is ideal to complete the Common App/Personal Statement essay first to allow time for the other essays later in the summer.
